COUNCIL AGREE TO DEFER NEW! LETT, A deputation representing the Wellington, Hockey, Lacrosse and Football Associations and tbe Wellington , Rugby League waited on the reserve* fcommittee of th© City Council and asked that the levying of the increased charges for the use of the city reserves bo deferred for six months, to enable the ,winter sports associations to arrange their finances to meet the charges next season. Tho committee recommended the council last evening to accede to the re-

quest. Councillor McKenzie took exception to the recommendation. A subcommittee, of which he was a member, brought down a report fixing certain charges tor the ensuing year, and this was adopted by the council. He was not against assisting the sports bodies but he took _ticeptdon to the committee trying to alter something that had already been 1 passed by the council. Councillor Hindmareh asked for tho Mayor's ruling as to whether a comfnittoo could nullify a resolution of tho council He said that tho council passed a resolution fixing charges at a certain rate and the committee nullified that by saying, that those charges should not tsoime into operation until after ax months, or some other time. Could the council resolve to adopt such action without notice of motion? The Mayor explained that the council could do anything by unanimous action. It could thus undo at this meeting what had been passed before if it liked. Councillor Buddie said that in adopting the committee’s recommendation the council did not say anything about the charges coming into farce this year. The recommendation was that the charges be increased. When the subcommittee mot it was late in the year, and they met without notifying any members of the winter sports bodies. In adopting tho increased charge they overlooked that tho winter sports bodies had arranged their finances for the year. H© thought it was quite a fair thing to hold the matter over till next year. Tlie resolution for the adoption, or the committee's , recommendation wa« carried ‘without dissent.
