CONFIDENCE TRICK
ON THE MANUKA AUCKLAND RESIDENT PARTS WITH HIS WATCH. By Telegraph—Pres-; Association.—Copyright (Received May 15, 0.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 14. Mr Leslie Monteith, a resident of Auckland, who was a passenger by tho Manuka, has been the victim of tho confidence trick. Standing on the deck of tho steamer, ho entered into conversation with a stranger. Mr Monteith pulled out his gold watch to seo the time, and the stranger remarked upon its excellent design. Ho asked its value. Mr Monteith replied that he did not know. It was a present from his mother. . Tho stranger suggested that it should he valued, and induced Mr Monteith to go to a well-known jeweller’s in Georgo street. The stranger entered with the watch, and Mr Monteith waited outside for half an hour, after which ho found that the stranger had slipped out by another door.
