PURCHASES BY THE GOVERNMENT. • Press Association. GISBORNE, May 14. Regarding the operations of the Land for Settlements Department, the following comparative return -was read by the Prime Minister in his speech hist evening, showing the area of pri-vately-owned • land purchased by tho Government during the last four years and the amount expended in the acquisition of these lands: —
Mr Massey stated that these figlires were a conclusive answer to those who said the Government were not pursuing a vigorous closer settlement policy. In addition, an area of 75,000
acres of native land had been acquired during 1913-14, and the expenditure was £176,149. The area purchased for the past year was a class of land suitable for settlement in small holdings, comprising such blocks as Porangahau, Maagamaire, Tahorsviti, and Tiritu.
