PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
■ The concert given by the Philharmonic Orchestra in His Majesty s Theatre last evening was a great success and the largo audience that as- ■ sembled expressed its hearty appreciation of the splendid manner in which tile orchestra interpreted the various* selections. The programme was a most pleasing one, and Mr C. Hellerannn and those associated with him did it full justice. The opening number was Von Suppe’s “Pique 1 Damo,” and it at once .appealed to all, the delicate movements followed by vigorous passages giving the company full scope to display its merits. The Egyptian Ballet suite is a composition of wide range, .but full of. power. Opening with “Allegro non troppo,” the music seems to carry an Oriental distinction which is wafted into the concert chamber. The alluring air of “Allegretto” was charmingly interpreted, and was greeted with applause. “Andante SostenUto’ 1 gives the impression that the spiritual strain of angelic voices is coming out of space. As a conclusion to this suite “Andantino ‘ Expressive” was imbued .with: a religious air, an<l, received loud applause. Alias Groabolz, who is the- possessor of an extremely highly-cultured contralto voice, gave a fine interpretation of “0 Divine Redeemer,”’ and in reply to’persistent recalls effectively responded with “Abide With Me.” The clarinet solo, ' “Bei-cense de Jocelyn” (Godard), given hy Mr H. Moschini, is a quaint htV. tlo air intoned-with a. crispness and ' 6i.loHno.ss that was delightful to hear. Aliss Gresholz, who was in splendid “voice, sang “The Birth of Morn, ’ which was heartily received. A selection from “Faust” "(Gounod) was of distinct merit, the delicate music .being hoard to advantage as the piece foso gradually higher and higher. The beauty and glamour of the mime was o' fitting finalO to a most enjoyable entertainment.
