THE LABOUR OUTLOOK
CONDITIONS DURING FEBRUARY. Dealing with, the state of the labour market in Wellington during February, the “Labour Journal” says:—“During the month trade and labour conditions have been normal generally. The building trades may be summed up as quiet, a falling-off having been experienced since last mouth in some branches. ■ In the retail trades good average business is reported in the clothing, boots, and grocery lines. Be-tween-seasons’ sales have been in vogue in many shops, and general appearances indicate a fairly healthy tone of trade.” Referring to unskilled labour, the “Journal” says: —“Good weatherconditions have prevailed for outdoor work during the month, and employment has been fairly good. A number of the new arrivals from overseas who called have been assisted. There appears to be a disinclination on the part of many of those seeking employment to go into the country. In comparison with those assisted during this period twelve months ago the present one shows a substantial increase. A total of 203 men were assisted, 43 being married 'and 160 single, with 111 dependants. One hundred and eightytwo were sent to private employment and twenty-on© to Government works. The classes of labour assisted comprised carpenters, farm hands, hotel workers, general labourers, miners, drivers, gardeners, etc. Fifty-three came from the North Island, eighteen from the South Island, twenty-seven from the Commonwealth, eighty-two from Great Britain, and twenty-three from elsewhere.”
