TRADE WITH THE UNITED STATES
That the question of fostering closer trade relations with the United States has forced itself to the front, in Australasia has for some time been evident. Among the signs of the interest in thgt direction are the feeling aroused by the San Francisco Exhibition, the project of Messrs Dalgety , and Co. for shipping wool direct in large quantities to the States, and the greatly increased attention devoted to the question of improving the shipping facilities between the two countries. Under the circumstances it is eminently satisfactory to,observe that the same question has excited enough interest in America to induce immediate and thorough study of the commercial and industrial conditions in Australasia. A cable message some days ago from Sydney informed us of the arrival there of commissioners from the United States charged with this important duty. The Commissioners represent the “National Association of Manufacturers,” a powerful body, the members of which employ some millions of workers, and have an invested capital running into an aggregate of several millions in the manufacturing industry. The cable message added the significant fact that this is the first time tho association has seriously taken up tho question of developing trade with Australasia. These Commissioners are now, according to a cable received last night, on the Riverina on their way to Auckland. Their reception is a matter for the earnest consideration of the Chambers of Commerce of this country. We have shown that wo are determined to do business on a big scale with the United States. Here is a powerful representative force readv to reciprocate with us. Communication with that force must he of the greatest advantage to us, not only in showing the lines of trade most easily to be established, but also in the direction of possibly attracting capital for investment on an important scale in manufacturing industry. We trust the leading business men among us will make earnest and methodic preparation for making tho most of the opportunity so unexpectedly presented.
