STATE BAKERY
NO ALARM CAUSED

The bakers are not alarmed by Mr Hall’s scheme of a-State bakery, being of opiniori that it would bo unable to produce good, clean bread at a penny a pound. [Mr Hall, Minister for Justice, announced a few days ago that the New South Wales Government intended to start a State bakery to supply the Government institutions. With the steadily-increasing cost of living the Government bad, he said, found itself having to pay more each year for the upkeep of the institutions. The question of keeping down the cost was fast becoming acute. The tenders for broad this year showed an increase of 28 per cent, compared with last year. He was convinced there was no real justification for this immense increase. In support of the contention that a ring existed among the bakers, ho stated that the Government had refused to accept the lowest tenders and called for fresh ones, which showed a large drop, tho bakers apparently having guessed that inquiries were afoot witn a view to the starting of a Government establishment. After- caieful consideration, tho Government had purchased the up-to-date bakery of Boss and Sons, Stanmore, and would start baking for its own institutions in February next. It was expected to produce bread at a penny a pound.]
