“THE ONLY DIFFERENCE”

The “Wairarapa Age,” to which the “New Zealand Times” seems to be as a red rag to a bull, declares our allegation that the Dominion has withdrawn its support from the British Navy as an allegation grotesque iand absurd. The Dominion, we are (gravely informed by our rural critic, ,has not withdrawn its support, and here is tho proof:—“lt is still .paying the interest on the Dreadnought loan. It is still contributing £IOO,OOO towards the naval defence of the Empire. The only difference in policy is that tho £IOO,OOO is, to be expended -locally in training men for the British Navy, instead of its being sent Home to be expended by the Admiralty.” Of course we are still paying off by the cost of the gift-ship. Not even the Massey-Alien Government can undo or alter that. But tho contention that New Zealand is continuing to pay an annual subsidy to the British Navy by fooling the money away locally is too comical. According to our country contemporary the subsidy is still being paid, but “the only difference in policy” is that the, Admiralty is not getting the money! We are hanging on to the £IOO,OOO a .year instead of parting with it. That is “the only difference in policy”!
