(Christchurch). „ * A private telegram received in Wellington yesterday announced the death at Auckland of Air James Stewart, civil engineer, at .the age of eightytwo. He was born An Perthshire, Scotland, and arrived in Auckiand in'1859." There he practised his- profession os civil engineer and surveyor. He designed tho Auckland waterworks, surveyed the Auckland and Drury railway, end in 1862 was -appointed engineer to the Auckland City Board of Works. During the AVaikato war he held a command in the second-class militia, and--after doing special work in the AVaikato was appointed, in conjunction., with Air Harding, engineer for,, thoconstruction of the Auckland-Drury - railway. Some years later he becamei inspector of steamers and examiner of-* engineers at Auckland under the Marine Department, and while in the de-" partment’s service ho designed several’ lighthouses. In 1872 he was appointed resident engineer, of tho Auckland and Alercer railway, and two years afterwards the whole of the railway works in the Auckland province were placed in his charge as district engineer. In 1881 he was retired from the department and resumed private practice, undertaking many important works. He was subsequently appointed consulting engineer to the Auckland city tramways with the electrification of which ho had' much to do. The deceased gentleman was an uncle of Air J.
