Yesterday’s sitting of. the Ma&f; *rate’s Court was presided over by Mr |E. W. Burton, S.M. 'A. Anderson failed to appear on a 'charge of owning a bulldog which had attacked Sing On Kee. He victed and fined £3, in default tmee days’ imprisonment, if the fine was recovered, £1 was ordered to be paid to the' Chinaman. Albert Bradbury was convicted on a similar charge, the game penalty being inflicted. Both defendants were ordered to pay interpreter's fee 5s 3d, witnesses’ expenses Bs, and Court costs 13s. . Harold William Brown was convicted of riding a motor-cycle in Willis street without having a. registration mark attached, A nominal penalty of Is, with Court costs 7s, was imposed, default being fixed at twenty-four hours detention. ' For drunkenness, Christina Lawson was fined 10s, or forty-eight hours imprisonment, and Edward Henry, Wright was fined £2, or three days’.; One first offender, who fiuled to appear, had his bail estreated. E. W. Mills and Co. were proceeded against on two counts of failing to stamp receipts for over £2. It was explained that the office boy, who was handed the receipts to put through the franking machine, forgot to do so, and forwarded the receipts unstamped. The Magistrate imposed a nominal penalty of Is, with costs 7s. ! Oswald Graham, who failed to appear, was charged with driving a motor-car along Manners street without having a rear light attached. He was convicted and fined 10s, with costs 7s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. On a charge of riding a motor-cycle in Oriental terrace without a light or registration mark, William Jackson pleaded guilty, and was fined 10s on the first count, and 20s on the second, in default twenty-four hours’ in each case.
Francis Carlyle Kuring, who did not appear, was. charged with leaving a motor-car unattended in Cuba street. He was Convicted and fined 10s, with Court costs 11s, and witnesses’ expenses Bs, in default twenty-four hours. Fanny Pool, licensee of the Empire Hotel, was proceeded against by W. T. Bailey, Inspector of 'Factories, for working certain employees in excess of the hours provided for, and failing to pay overtime rates. On this count, she was convicted and discharged. On a further count of failing to keep a proper record showing in the case of each assistant the total hours worked and wages paid, as required by the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, she was convicted and fined £2, with the alternative of three days’ imprisonment. The Magistrate, in imposing the penalty, ‘remarked that in a case of a similar description the other day, the full penalty had been imposed. As this, however, was apparently the first time a charge had been made out against the defendant, the fine would be lighter. A. Dimdoro was proceeded against by the Inspector of Factories for keeping his shop open when such premises were required to be closed. Defendant was convicted and fined £l, with 7s costs'. Bartoldi Paino was charged with smoking in an auction mart in Allen street. He was convicted and fined Is, with costs 7s. Charged similarly Alfred Tilbury, who failed to appear, was fined ss, with costs 7s, or twentyfour hours’ dentention. For allowing a horse to wander at Miramar, James Ogden was fined os, with costs 12s. Convicted of similar offences, H. Walker and John Telford were fined Is each. The costs in each case amounted to £1 13s. Esther Collier, found drunk fn York street, was ordered to pay 17s Gel for curative treatment, in default three days’ imprisonment.
