KAIMATA TRAGEDY
ECHO IN SUPREME COURT. Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, February 4. An echo of the Kaimata tragedy, in which, in August last, Gladys Ju lian, Frank Smith, and Edward'Juliaii were killed by Frederick James Virgin, was heard in the Supreme Court to-day, when Eva Julian, widow of Edward Julian, proceeded against the Public Trustee for £B2O, value of the house and furniture destroyed |jy the fire alleged to have been caused by Virgin. Two ' children, Verner Julian and Dorothy Julian, who escaped from the house where the crime was committed, again told the story of the murder in all its harrowing details. The case for the defendant was that there were no facts to prove that Virgin wilfully caused the fire. It was argued that although Virgin committed the murders yet he was insane, and the fire might have been accidental. Mrs Virgin was called to prove that Julian’s furniture was not so valuable as plaintiff claimed. After hearing lengthy evidence, the jury returned a verdict for £720.
