WHAT THE VESSEL CARRIED
HIGHLY INFLAMMABLE CARGO. The Moa had on board cargo of a highly inflammable natoro. It consisted" <if 844 cases of kerosene IoUO cases of motor spirits, 22 cases of benzine, 75 cases of turpentine, ancl £a tons of general cargo 'tr'att&mppeU from the Karamea. IN HEll JUBILEE TEAK. Although tho Moa is usually enkaned in tho coal trade between Westport and Wanganui, Eoxton and New Plymouth, she has been a constant visitor to Port Nicholson, especially when things are busy in shipping circles. To old marine identities who can cast their memories back somo twenty or thirty years, she should bo especially familiar, for she was a. regular trader along the coast at mat time. Sho was especially well known along tho Esfet Coast. When the question arose of enlarging the Moa it was treated with some diffidence, the suggestion even being put forward that she should be 'put on the scrapped list. However, the work or amplitying tho vessel's proportions was carried out, and the Moa has since proved herself to bo a very useful adjunct to the mosquito fleet. By a coincidence the vessel has met he* end in her jubilee year. She was built in 1864 by Mr B. Phillips, of Lyttelton, but was owned by the Wel-lington-Wanganui Steam Packet Company. The Moil was a twin-screw steamer of 185 tons gross and 92 tons net. Her dimensions were:—Length 118.9 feet, breadth IS feet, depth 8 feet 6 inches. Her engines were by Muir and Houston, of Glasgow.
