Reporting on the work for the week ended January 29th, the mine superin. tendent of Ro.js Reconstructed, says; —' Mine 6th Level, No. 2 Shoot. —No. 3 south haa been extended to 212 ft from the shoot and stopped. At this point a prospecting; shaft will be sunk tor the purpose of testing and locating any layers of wash that may exist below this level. A start will bo made with this work this afternoon. * No. 2 south is now 101 ft from the opening, and io passing through wash of low value. No. 1 west has been extended to 84ft from the opening. This drive is also jn low grade wash. Two parties are blocking at this shoot —one off No. 1 west drive and one off No. 2 south- Both these faces are in wash of average quality. Cassius Woridnga, No. 3 Shoot. —East drive has broken through to some of Cassius blocking that Baa not beau shown on any of tho plans. This drive has been stopped, and a north drive opened to prove the extent and value of the wash left in this direction. Four shifts were lost during tho week owing to heavy rains necessitating the closing of the lock, thus causing the men to bo withdrawn from the working places. Pacific Coast wheat put afloat totalled 48,000 quarters, as against 25,000 last week and 30.000 n year ago. The total quantity of wheat and flour shipped from all exporting countries dur-
ing the week ended January 31st was equivalent to 2,755,000 quarters of wheat, compared with 1,155,000 quartern in the previous week and 1,650,000 quarters a year ago. The weekly total includes 267,000 quarters of Australasian wheat. The wheat market ie quiet. Prices for Australian cargoes are steady, La Plata is easier owing to shippers being more disposed to sell. Thirty-six shillings is asked fox* New_ South Wales, just sailed,'and 35s 6d is offered. Six thousand tons of (Vest Australian, ex steamer, sold at 35s 7Jd per quarter.

(Note —-Quotations, unless otherwise speeded, are average market prices Generally— I The market is dull and unsettled. Mutton —High prices are restricting business in the mutton market. Prices for North Inland have declined from 5d per lb to -t(d. LambHigh prices have been restricting business, but have declined. Other than Canterbury, 6jd. As high as 7d has beon obtained in more than one in. stance. The demand is chiefly for Australian, which' may be quoted Id lower. Beef —Stocks of . Now Zealand beef on hand are light. There is a fair demand. New Zealand hinds 4id per lb. fores 4d. Butter—The market is quiet, but there is no reduction in prices, with a fair demand. There is only a moderate demand for Now Zealand. Present -prices of New Zealand butters are expected te create an increasing demand. There is no change in prioeq for New Zealand, Australian, Argentine and Siberian. Danish. 125 s to 128 s per owt. Cheese—The market is quiet but steady, with no change in prices for Canadian. It ia reported that some sellers are bearing the market for New Zealand cheese. New Zealand white Sis 6d to 65a per cwt. There is no change in prices for coloured! ~ _ Hemp—Manila i The market remains firm. American buying continues in Philippines. Purchases to. date estimated at approximately 100,000 bales. At this end the market is quiet but Steady at last quotations. The output from Manila for the week was 19,000 bales. New Zealand: TJie market is quiet but steady . Fair hemp, in dock, offered at -02! to j£24 5s per ton. High point fair in same position has sold at J 625. Forward shipment, good fair, £2S 10s, fair .£2l ss. Sisal: The market, is steadier and the price is equal to £27 to. .£B7 10s per ton c.i.f. Europe, Steeles as at December 30th were 88,174 bales against 03.901 previous, year. Total exports for year 875.097 bales against 855,866 for the previous year. . Wool—The market is quiet but firm.
