Captain Pritchard, harbourmaster at the nort of Sydney, is of the opinion that proper provision for ship breaking in the port will have to bo made at no distant date. In his annual report to the Harbour Trust the harbourmaster says on this subject:—‘‘At present, ship-break-ing in this port is in the hands of a few firms and individuals, and on giving a ’guarantee to the commissioners that the work will be performed within a certain, period—which often has to bo extended — permission is given to tow the vessel to bo uroken up to some retired bay in the harbour, where the work is carried out. As I pointed out. there seems to be no possibility of compelling owners to tow old vessels, which have been finally placed out of commission, to sea anil sink them, because their value is often such that it would be unreasonable to insist upon such a course being followed. I think, however, that it is neces. sary that we should give some facilities for breaking up vessels within the port, ns it-is the practice in other large ports, such as London, Liverpool, etc., where companies with very large capitals entry oai the business of buying and breaking up all classes of old vessels. Those companies probably- carry out their operations, on their own property. The num-

her of vessels hero to bo demolished is orobabl.v not so gioat. that wo can expect ili<> difiWent linns, who carry on this busine&J to acquire premises .largo euou"-b to perform the work, but if wo do not give reasonable lacilities for breaking tip vessels wo shall have in course of time a largo number of derelicts lying about in tho port which will become, in several, ways, a,-n inconvenience from a shipping point of view'." FROM SYDNEY. This week’s Sydney boat, the HuddartParkcr liner Ulimaroa, arrived in the stream at 10.30 yesterday morning, and after pratique had been granted berthed at No. 1. Queen’s wharf, about an hour later. The vessel experienced a fair passage across, northerly winds being prevalent. The Ulimaroa cleared Sydney Meads at 3 p.m. on Saturday last, and when twenty-four hours out the Canada Capo, bound from Sydney to this port, was passed. The vessel brought a largo number of passengers for all ports, and an exceptionally heavy cargo, which included 1040 tons for Wellington. She sails this evening at 5 o clock for Melbourne and H-obart via southern ports. OVERSEA VESSELS FOR WELLINGTON.
