SERVICES APPRECIATED
GIFT TO AUCKLAND POLICE. Frees Association. AUCKLAND, December 24. The customary pay day parade of the Auckland city and suburban police, held at the central police station this afternoon, was attended by the Mayor, Mr O. J. Parr, and several members of the Auckland Citizens’ Defence Committee formed in connection with the recent strike. At the conclusion of the parade Mr Parr addressed the men, complimenting them on their behaviour during the strike time. He stated that the Defence Committee recognised the debt of gratitude which the citizens owe to the police for the manner in which they had done their duty during the most strenuous times, when men had to be at their posts night and day. The Citizens’ Defence Committee had decided to mark in a small measure their appreciation of the services rendered by the police by a donation of £SO. It was felt that it might probably be indelicate to offer the gift as an addition to the men’s wages, but no objection could be taken to the gift as a donation to the library and gymnasium funds, and the donation was put that way.
