RHODESIA
CROWN’S ANNEXATION POLITICAL SITUATION ELECTRICAL. l!y Telegraph—Pres Association— Copyright CAPETOWN. December 23. Sir Leauder Jameson (chairman of the Chartered Company), speaking at Salisbury, said the Crown’s annexation of Rhodesia was easy, but confiscation impossible. The Chartered Company, in the event of annexation, would file a petition of its rights and recover its property. The company, however, would do its beat to allay any soreness. He described tho political situation as electrical, and argued that in tho went of sudden prosperity in Rhodesia coming after the renewal of tho charter responsible government would become inevitable. Tho only alternative to the charter was absorption in the Union. (.Loud dissput.) The Union, lie declared, ought to settle its internal troubles before inviting Rhodesia to join. A sensation was caused by Sir L. Jameson’s reading of Mr Lewis Harnourt’s opinion. Sir L. Jameson hinted at the possibility of a great self-governing State from the Congo to Mafoking, including Northern and Southern Rhodesia and Beohuanahuid. This would he a fitting monument to tho late Cecil Rhodes’s memory.
Sir Lcander Jameson emphasised that Rhodesia must choose between the Chartered Company and tho Union. He quoted Mr Lewis H arcourt’s opinion. Differences between tho elected members and tho Council would inevitably raise the question of entry into the Union.
