Mr Roosevelt heatedly retorted that as the American policy the doctrine was still very much alive. The incident illustrated the wisdom of the modern American party restricts ing the Monroe Doctrine around the Caribbean Sea. Mr Roosevelt is about to abandon civilisation and plunge into the jungles of the Amazon basin on a sporting and scientific trip.
