THE MAYOR'S FUND
CHRISTMAS CHEER FOR DISTRESSED FAMILIES. The meeting convened by the Mayor lib raise funds to provide Christmas cheer for families affected by the strike, which was adjourned from Monday, was continued yesterday afternoon in the Mayor’s room. In explaining the position of the committee set up to deal with the matter, the Mayor pointed out that the appeal was being made to the people of Wellington from him as Mayor of the city, as the result of certain happenings which had brought about distress among the people. He wanted to make it quite clear that the appeal had no connection with tho nrnko committee, but was being conducted by himself with the co-opera-tion of several interested ladies and gentlemen. Aid to those in distress is to be dispensed by means of signed orders. The form prohibits the dispensing of money and intoxicants, food and the usual necessities of the Christmas season alone being allowed. The following subscriptions were acknowledged;—Bell, Gully, Bell and Myers £10; Mr T. S. Weston £5 ss; Mrs Preston £1 Is; Dresden Piano 'Co. £2 2s; Mr Maudsley £2 2s; Dr. Piatts-Mills £1 Is; Mr M. J. Reardon £1 Is; Mrs Barltrop £1; Fruitbrokers’ .Association £5 5s ; E.A.M. 10s 6d: Mr Cox, missioner to seamen, 10s 6d. Tho total amount of the fund is now £260 6b.
