THE LATE DR McARTHUR
The sudden death of Dr McArthur, the senior Stipendiary Magistrate in this city, removes a gentleman who was one of nature’s finest types of humanity. As magistrate and citizen the doctor set a good example of forbearance, kindness, humour, and many other most excellent qualities. With great ability ho presided not only over tlie ‘‘people’s Court,” but over special tribunals of varied character calling for tho exorcise of keen judgment, judicial impartiality, and that wonderful insight into human nature that was peculiarly his. Dr McArthur was known and respected far and wide for his sterling merit as a man, his sympathy with the frailer and erring elements in tho community, his over readiness and determination to romper justice with mercy, and above all his open-handed generosity. But, like most good men. Dr McArthur was quiet and unostentatious, • so that comparatively few' people are probably aware of tho breadth and cosmopolitan nature of his charity. To all with whom his important and multifarious duties brought association lie was at all times mnd, courteous, good humoured and good natured. and while he could always exercise the high authority of a magistrate, the man was never obscured in tho official. Ho really occupied a unique place in tho esteem of the community. H© was an institution, and a worthy one. Wo respectfully join with the people of Wellington in offering sincere sympathy to Mrs McArthur in tho very heavy loss that she is called upon to bear.
