MIRAMAR BOROUGH

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Miramar Borough Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr F. Townsend) presiding. , T The assistant Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs wrote in reply to the council’s request for an amendment to the Municipal Corporations Act making local authorities liable for the special rates on land acquired by them. The answer was to the effect that it would require very grave consideration before any alteration could be made. The request was prompted by the City Council’s acquirement of a certain area of land for recreation purposes in Miramar, in respect of which the Miramar council did not now receive any rates. The report of the public woras committee stated that the borough engineer had been authorised to arrange for the filling required at the oil store at the power station. It had been decided to (construct a footpath on Moredum terrace, giving access from Tio Tio road to Mr Fraser’s property, at a cost not exceeding £6 or £7, on the condition that Mr Fraser contributed £3 towards the cost. A petition had been received for an extra . light on Inglis street, hut it was decided not to accede to the request, and to inform the petitioners that the electric lighting of the whole borough was under review. The borough engineer had been instructed to confer with the owners of the land in connection with the supply of water to the three house on block 5, Marino parade, Seatoun. The engineer’s report' for the month jstated that eleven connections had been made with the water system, making the total number to date 220, and sixteen permits were issued for sewer connections, making the number of these sixty-eight. Seven building permits were issued of a total value of £1231, and the fees were £3 15s. The expenditure in wages for the month ending October 14th was £lO2 8s 2d, of which £33 6s 2d was for wages of men engaged in road repairs and £lB Gs Id in respect of the road formation in Munro street. The report of the electric lighting committee stated that it had been decided to make an application to the Minister for Public Works for a license to run electric mainj. in the district. The preparation of a report and estimate dealing with the electric lighting of the district was considered, and it was decided to ask the City Council to (supply information as to electric mains laid since the former schedule was prepared. _
