Rennie, organist to St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Petonc, is at present in Napier, recuperating his health. Tho ‘’Railway Review” states that Mr AV. Flanagan, engine-driver, Christchurch, has been promoted to the position of clerk in AVellington. Among those who registered at tho Grand Hotel yesterday were Messrs A. L. Baird (Sydney), and AV. H. McCullough (Melbourne). Tlio Hons. E. C. J. Stevens. J. T. Paul, and G. J. Smith. M-L.C-’s, are expected to return to Wellington from the South this morning. Mr Frank J. Bowens, a tourist from Chicago, visited tho AVellington Tourist Bureau yesterday, nud left by last night’s express for Rotorua. Captain Gregson is in of the Corinthic, which is duo at AV ellington next Monday from London. Dr H. C. Watson is ship’s surgeon. His Honour Mr Justice Sim will leave Wellington te-day for New Plymouth, to preside over the sittings there of the Arbitration Court. Among the passengers to Auckland by the Slain Trunk express yesterday were Messrs Alderton. Fagan, Royle, Rose, Northoroft. and Friodlander. Mr M. Laracy, secretary of the Sheepshcarers’ Association, returned returned yesterday from Woodvillo, where he has been on official business. Mr and Mrs Ultan McCabe and daughter leave hy the Manuka to-mor-row for Melbourne and Sydney, and expect to be absent from Wellington for about five weeks.' Sir Charles Bowen, Speaker _of the Legislative Council, is returning to Wellington hy the AVahine this morning, after a- week-end visit to his homo in the South. Messrs G. J. Anderson, G. AV. Russell, and G. W. Forbes, M.P.’s, who havo been visiting their homes in tho south, will return to _ AVellingion this morning by the AVahine. Mr D. Moriarty, secretary of the Furniture AVorkers’ Union, leaves for New Plymouth to-day, in order to attend the sittings of tho Arbitration Court, which open there to-morrow. Mr E. H. Hiley, General Manager of Railways, and Mr T. Ronayne, who have been making an inspection of tho lines in Canterbury, Otago and Southland, are expected to return to Wellington to-day. Mr P. Selig, managing director of the Christchurch “Press” Company, who has been on a visit to Sydney, arrived in Auckland by tho Mahcno on Sunday. Mr Selig will return to Christchurch some time this week. Mr J. L. Fleming, of the locomotive department, at Palmerston railway station, before leaving on transfer to Auckland, was presented with a silver entree dish and a silver-mounted pocket wallet from the members of the staff. Commissioner Richards, of the Salvation Army, will leave AVellington tor a tour in the south at the end of tho present month. He will visit Dunedin on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, November Ist, 2nd, 3rd, and Christchurch on November sth. The chief secretary will accompany the Commissioner. Mr Smith, stationmastcr at Palmerston North, who is retiring on Monday on superannuation, has seen forty years in tho railway service, the last fifteen of which havo been spent in Palmerston North. Mr Smith arrived in Palmerston North in 1823 from Maptorton, where he had also ;becn stationmastcr, and prior to that saw service in tho same capacity at Mosgicl. Tlic Right Hon. Sir Joshua Williams will ho met by members of tho legal profession this morning in connection with his appointment as a Privy Councillor. The Bar will assemble in tho Supremo Court at 10 o’clock. “While the distinction that has been conferred upon tho learned judge is generally recognised and appreciated in legal circles, the sentiment is tempered with regret at the impending loss of a respected member of the Bench.

A Press Association telegram from New Plymouth states that, a private cable message from London recoiled there notifies the death of Airs Leatham, wife of Dr Loatham. who with his family is now in England. Recognition of tho services of an old and valued member of the Fire Police was made pt the annual meeting of the corps last evening, when tho treasurer, Mr F. Cohen, was presented with a cut glass silver-mounted liqueur stand, bearing tho inscription, “To Treasurer F. Cohen, from AV.ALF.P., October, 1913.” Tho presentation was made by His AVors.hip tho Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke), who referred to the recipient's long connection with tiro brigade and fire police affairs. Tho Mayor expressed regret that Mr Cohen was not now il member of tho City Council, but said he hoped that he would in time again occupy a seat at the table. Mr Cohen, who was taken quite by surprise, stated that ho joined the original Fire Brigade in 1866, and had been in tho service ever since. This was tho first presentation of tho kind that had been mado to him. Ho appreciated it very much, and his wife would do tho same. Several other members added tributes to Air Cohen’s personal character, and subsequently those present wore entertained hy tho Mayor, and an enjoy*ablo time spent.
