Turns gained further ground, but Bills just managed kick into touch with plav in the Wellington hall.: Stiller broke away from the line-out, j eury being pushed into touch near h.i own twenty-five. After the lineoat Burns and Fuller put in a pretty piece of combined work coii’n tho touch-line, and almost immediately* after Hegarty and Fuller broke away from tho line-out with a bit of concerted play* which was stopped by, negarty letting the ball go into touch. At this stage Canterbury wore hold-, ing their opponents, who wore compelled to do some solid defensive work.J. Ryan got his side out of an awkward place. J. Parker next put in a useful kick, which carried "play to tho Canterbury twenty-five. Miller secured possession and was tackled right on The Canterbury line, A strong attack was at once developed on tho outer wing, McLeod being prominent. Burns liras chiefly responsible for clearing the Canterbury line, and Fuller put in a useful effort which had Wellington again defending. A mark stopped the rush, but tho Canterbury backs quickly got to work in a passing rush, which was spoilt by Guthrie declining a pass. Tho latter’s failure to take the ball from a high kick had his side in trouble a moment later, Morris being within an aco of scoring. Fuller brought off a fine save, and with play in the Wellington half the red backs rushed away with an attack which ended in Guthrio being pushed out near tho corner, the ball eventually* going into touch in goal. An exCttango of kicks followed tho Ijjck-out, and then a side-stepping run by E. Ryan put his side in an attacking -position. From a mark by Morris, it. Paton had an unsuccessful shot at. ,gual. Fast following up by the WelTington forwards threatened danger to Canterbury, but Simpson broke clear and took play to the Wellington twen-ty-five. Tiie footwork of the Welling(ton forwards soon regained the lost (ground, but they were unable,-to hold jit when Canterbury got possession. 'Tho work of the Canterbury rearguard was brighter than that of their opponents, but it was lacking in finish, (though Burns and Fuller wore putting in good work. From a fret-kick Crawshaw had an unsuccessful shot at 'goal, and a moment or two later the (same player ■ potted at goal, the hall going wide. The Wellington forwards drove the opposition back, but a passing rush took play to the Wellington twenty-five, Guthrio spoiling tho effort by dropping the ball. The s-peil ended with Canterbury attacking, Fuller cutting off a pass and putting in a good run, but he was unsupported. In tho second half Fuller retired with an injured knee, and E. Fraser took his place. Good kicking by Wateon onco had play in the Wellington twenty-five, where Burns took a clever 'mark. His kisk was marked in turn by J. Ryan, who took the bajl well in the face of a forward rush. 'E. Ryan got in a useful kick, but Henry found the line in return just at the centre. Play hovered in midfield until Guthrie kicked hard down the field to Parker, who got out of trouble rather luckily. Simpson headed a rush Which threatened danger, but once again E. Ryan saved his side. With play in tho centre the Canterbury backs got possession, but were bustled by their opponents. Taylor’s pass tp Fraser was cut off by J. Ryan, who raced down the touchlino, and, be?, ting Henry, wound up a good ruu by scoring near the corner. Patch’s kick at goal went just outside. Wellington 3, Canterbury 0. ■

The kick-out was followed by a rush of Canterbury forwards, which was checked by E. Ryan. They quickly made another effort, but overran the ball. A passing rush looked promising, but Guthrie, after making a dash, was will tackled. The Wellington forwards, whose footwork was vigorous, took play to the reds’ twenty-five, where Canterbury wero penalised. Patou kicked a fine goal. Wellington 6, Canterbury 0. Canterbury attempted to open up the game when play was resumed, but their passing was too slow, and Kinvig broke through, supported by E. Ryan. However, tho tackling proved equal to the occasion. Wellington soon had their opponents defending again, and a cross-kick by Boyd should have resulted in a score, but the bounce of tho ball beat Kinvig., Maxwell and Simpson headed a forward rush, which gave the blacks some trouble, and would have been more dangerous had those two players not been obstructed. Play settled in the Canterbury twenty-five, and Eraser, making a nice opening, passed to Crawshaw, who scored near the corner. He made a good but unsuccessful attempt at goal. Wellington 6, Canterbury 3. This score livened up the Canterbury team, and a little later Henry potted at goal, but his.kick was wide. A hot attack on the Wellington line almost let Burns over, but a fret? kick saved the situation, which was further improved from the visitors’ point of view by a long kick by H. Paton. Sound kicking by the Canterbury backs had Wellington again defending, and Bnrns made a determined effort, but was safe-* ly tackled. A mark by Morris checked another attack j but the reds were soon back again, Guthrie finding touch near the corner. Over-eagerness lost Canterbury a good chance, and a free kick enabled Wellington to clear. Tho pace had been very warm for a time, and it was evidently tolling, especially on Wellington, who made good us© of tho line. A fast rush by the Wellington forwards had Canterbury in trouble, and Morris made a nice opening, but Ryan was tackled. From a mark by Morris, H. Paton was making a shot at goal, bub this attempt was frustrated by Crawshaw. This was the beginning of another attack, which J. Ryan stopped, and although Canterbury nere pressing hard in tho final stages their backs were doing too much kicking, and the Wellington rearguard; making good use of the dine, stayed off the danger. The game ended with play in the Wellington half, the final score being: Wellington 6, Canterbury 3. REFEREES AT PLAY. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, September 13. The referees’ match, Canterbury v. Wellington, created much interest. Tho teams were drawn from the Referees’ Associations, and contained many old players. Wellington only mustered half a dozen men, the remainder of tho team being local men. Play was mostly in favour of Canterbury. in the early stages, but Wellington improved greatly towards the close, tho final scores being Canterbury 14, Wellington 12.
