WAIRARAPA V. HAWKE’S BAY AN INDIFFERENT GAME. Special to the “Times.” MASTERTON, July 17. Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay representatives met at ilasterton this a tier noon. Hawke's Bay opened the first speU with two smart passing rushes, in which McNamara, Holder, Stewart, Downing and McEwen participated, and it was the outcome of one of these that produced Hawke's Bay's score. Holder cleverly potting a goal almost immediately. McIntyre and Barry headed another rush to Wairarapa’t, goal line, and this being followed by a passing rush. Wairarapa Had their hands full to keep Hawke's Bay from scoring, C. Ross, D. Ross, H. McKenzie and 0. Welch broke away with the bail at toe, but Smyrk sent them scurrying back with a good kick well down the field, Darvill, and later George Ross, saved a score being registered against W airarapa by smart work. The Wairarapa backs started a passing rush, but the ball was dropped,, and Johnston kicked well down the field. This was followed shortly after by a fine run by Holder, who was eventually smothered after beating several men. The remainder of the spell was a wearisome exhibition of football; Hawke s Bay having somewhat the better of The' second spell was very little better than the first. Attractive football was conspicuous by its but there was noticeable improvement in' the play of the Wairarapa forwards. From Wairarapa's attack the ball was thrown out among the backs. Darvill scored near the corner, H. McKenzie converted. There was no further score, and a very poor game resulted in a win - for Wairarapa by 5 points to 4. Darvill, G. Ross, and Ball were the best of the home team, and C. Boss, H. McKenzie. Colder anti D. Boas of the forwards. Johnston, Holder, and McNamara were the pick of the Hawke's Bay backs, and Barry, Curtayne. O’Neill and Ormond of the forwards. The team will leave for Wellington tomorrow morning.
