It is stated that a contract for over £1,000,000 has been signed for the sconstruction of a railway from Collooney, on the north-east coast of Sligo, to’the proposed new harbour at Blacksod Bay. on the west coast of Mayo, in connection with tho All Red route, via Halifax.

Professor Starr Jordan, of Stanford University, lecturing on eugenics, declared that the effect of war was to spoil the breed ; and that the men left at home were useless for breeding. (Sydney "Sun” Special Cable.) LONDON, July 15. Two bronze statues of Lord Kitchener in his uniform of a field-marshal and seated on his horse Democrat have been cast. One will be erected at Calcutta and the other at Khartoum. SHIPBUILDING DISPUTE. LONDON. July 15. In connection with the shipbuilding dispute, the riveters on the Clyde are dissatisfied with the pooled vote of the different sections, and have resolved to insist on a' 5 per cent, advance or they will strike in August next. LOSS OF A STEAMER. LONDON. ’July 15. The Board of Trade inquiry into the loss of the steamer Mountoswald, with twenty-four hands, in February, 1912, the vessel being grain laden from Baltimore to Hamburg, has concluded. In its judgment, the court said it was miablo to attribute the vessel’s loss to the owners’ neglect, but considered that there had been an error of judgment. „ PLURAL VOTING BILL. . LONDON, July 16. The Bill to abolish plural voting has been read in the House of Commons a third time, by 293 votes to 222. MR BRYAN GOES LECTURING. NEW YORK, July 15. Mr W. J. Brvan, United States Secretary of State, declaring that he is unable to five oh £2400 per year, is starting on a lecturing tour. USB OF TROOPS IN JOHANNESBURG. LONDON, July 15. The Labour party’s executive passed a resolution that it is essential that the Government should grant time to discuss the use of troops in Johannesburg on the authority of the GovernorGeneral (Lord Gladstone). PRICE OP CONSOLS. LONDON, July 15. Imperial Consols are quoted at £72 17s 6d, as against £72 5s on Wednesday last. The Stock Exchange is more cheerful, owing to reassuring Balkan nows. Mr Asquith, the Prime Minister, replying to Mr John (Liberal) in the House of Commons, said tho Government would nest session submit proposals for reform of the House of Lords.
ROBBERY OF JEWELLERY. ADELAIDE, July 16. Two men • broke tho window of McDougall’s jewellery show at seven o’clock last night, and stole £550 worth of diamond rings. Two men on the opposite side ot the street witnessed the robbery, but did not intervene. MRS CORNWALLIS-WEST’S DIVORCE. LONDON. July 15. It is officially announced that Prince Arthur of Connaught has become engaged to Princess Alexandra Victoria
Louise. [Pr’nco Arthur is son of the Duke of Connaught, uncle of King George. He was horn in 1883. The Princess, born in 1891. is a daughter of the Princess Royal (Duchess of Fife), sister of the King.]
