POLITICAL JUGGLERY
To the Editor "N.Z. Times."
Sir, —When men aim to make a mark in political circles, integrity, character, and truthfulness should bo their watchword. I am adverse to the Massey Government, but at the last election wore an indifferent air similar to thousands of others. I remember Mr Fisher wooing the suffrages of this city, and in his desperation ho telegraphed to Mr Massey asking, if his party were victorious would retrenchment take place in the Civil Service. Of course the reply received was, No. But what has happened? Commissioners have been appointed, and certain men who do not come under the Act,
- , notwithstanding they have now a crei dit of over five years' service, aro to '■ '■ be retrenched. Some have been told ' candidly there is no prospect of continuity, while others have received no- ■ tice of retire me nt-. I understand some 1 300 will ultimately be affected. I ask, under such circumstances, if any reliance can be placed upon the utterance of the alleged "square deal" party. As for the service as a whole, there is little sympathy. Tho Liberal administration treated them fairly, yet they joined the cry of "want a change." They have got it. I am, etc., REFORM.
