CHANCES OF THE CONTEST

ELECTION ASSURED FOR LIBERAL CANDIDATE. Special to the “ Times.” GREYMOUTH, June 15. The vacancy in the Grey electorate caused by the death of Sir Arthur Guinness will create an election to bo held in about three weeks’ time. Mr M Hannan will stand in tho Liberal interest, and being so well known is certain of a very largo following. Mr Hannan will have a strong organisetion in working order within the next few days. On Monday meetings to form committees will be held at both Greymouth and Reefton, and immediately after at other centres. Mr Hannan will probably begin his campaign this week. The Reform party are anxious to bring out a candidate. The Hon. A. L. Herdman met several gentlemen at Greymouth and stated that tho party must be represented in the contest. Mr H. L. Michel; of Hokitika, was present at tho meeting and was pressed to stand' in tho interests of Mr Massey’s Government; but Mr Michel asked for time to consider his reply. Mr T. E. Coates, failing Mr Michel, Is likely to he asked to stand in the interests of the Government, but it is not likely that gentleman would enter the lists under present circumstances. There is a doubt whether Labour will he represented. If a strong man like Mr P. J. O’Regan, of Wellington, stood on behalf of Labour Mr Michel would probably decide to stand and make one in the triangular duel and run the chance of the second ballot. Mr O’Regan, however, though freely mentioned. is not likely to make one in the present fight. Failing that gentleman the Labour jiarty would have a difficulty in bringing out a man strong enough to make any serious impression in the contest. In any case it is doubtful whether Labour will attempt the contest at this stage, preferring rather to reserve its forces for the general election. . Mr Hannan has received promises of very cordial support from tie country districts already, and his popularity gives him a standing which will make him a hot favourite in _ any contest, and with any combination of candidates his return is generally spoken of as assured. Beyond doubt the Liberals are fortunate in having so strong a candidate to represent them.
