Many of the games were very stubbornly contested, and at the finish the two single players had notched five wins (from Messrs Topp, Weine, Berry, Loney and Jenkins), five draws (Messrs Purchan, Welton, Bland, Chatfield and Harper), and three defeats (losing to Messrs Thompson. Clark and Booth). Thompson. Bland. Berry, Booth, Perrott, Chatneld, Vase, Miller and Laughton. This tourney should provide splendid practice for all taking part in it. and some very close and exciting finishes are looked for. WORKING MEN’S CLUB. This club opened its 1913 handicap chess tourney last week,' when Barnes won from Coulter and also from Key. Wild and Milesi also opened with two wins each, the former scoring from Featonby and Arden, and the latter from Rutherford and Coulter. Arden won from Coulter, and the other games of the first round are outstanding. A few games have also been played in the draughts tourney, of which we propose to give occasional reports later on.
