LIGHTHOUSE-KEEPERS’ HOLIDAYS
To the Editor “ N.Z. Times.” Sir,—With pleasure I read in a copy of the “ Times ” of April loth a letter re leave of absence granted to lightkeepers. I happen to be in a position to know that what “ J. McC.” says is correct, and I agree with him every time as regards the lightkeepers deserving a good annual holiday. The time allowed to these men is altogether inadequate, and I think if the Minister of Marino has any feeling for them he will do his best to obtain for them an annual holiday worthy of' the name. lam well acquainted with several keepers and ex-keepers, and from them I have from time to time heard little grievances of theirs about which the public knows nothing. For the simple reason that they are comparatively few in number, and have little chance of being listened to, they are obliged to sit quiet and say nothing, like naughty children. I strongly advise Mr Fisher to take a trip around the various lighthouses, and doubtless he will hear something which, I venture to say, is news, to him. I understand that discontent exists _to some extent in the lighthouse service, and I sincerely hope that in these times of “ square deals,” etc., something may he done in favour of the men who watch our coastal lights. Thanking you, Mr Editor, for insertion of this,— I am, etc., ~ A SYMPATHISE!*. Wanganui.
