CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE
THAT ASSOCIATION NOT GENERALLY FAVOURED. Tho proposed Association of Chambers of commerce was ctiscussed at yesterday's meeting of tiie council of tho Wellington UUauinor. It was reported that oi the replies nsoeived to tho chamber’s circular on tho matter eleven were in tavour of tho proposal ami fourteen against. Tho chairman A. E. Mabin) said this was the last meeting of the present council, and it was tor them to say whctner or not they would quash the whole thing. It was not much use sending the thing on to a now committee that would Have to go into it do novo. Among the places that had signilied their agreement to enter the association were .Palmerston North, Christchurch, Dunedin, Tiznaru, and Napier, while among those opposed to tho proposal were Auckland, Wanganui, and Masterton. It was suggested that those chambers favourable to the proposition should bo informed as to the voting, and asked if they should not proceed with the association, and thus make a beginning. . Mr A, Leigh Hunt thought most of thoso against the proposal were the smaller places. They would all come in. Tho chairman said the thing was not receiving tho support it should from other chambers. At the conference held three years ago it was decided that as soon as fifteen chambers assented the Wellington chamber should call the first meeting. Mr Mclntosh moved that th© Wellington chamber communicate with the other assenting chambers asking if they were in favour of the association being formed. It was certain that they would get more than three in favour out of those that had not yet replied. It was finally decided, that in tho opinion of tho Wellington chamber the formation of the association should be proceeded with.
