THE SHOOTING
AN ANOMALOUS “REGIMENTAL” MATCH. Service matches do not permit. of much description, and from a rifleman’s standpoint they are regarded as “silly” events. The A series were commenced yesterday, the first match being the Regimental Team Match. Though this possessed a military title the peculiar thing was that not one single entry came from any Territorial company or battalion. All the competitors were riflemen, and the match was won by the Wellington Suburbs No. 1 team, with a score of 302. Christchurch Rifle Club were second with 2&t. and the Auckland City . Club occupied third position, three points behind Christchurch. This match is fired over 300, 500, and 600 yards ranges. Snap-shooting is indulged in at the first distance, rapid firing at 500 yards, and slow firing at 600 yards. Figure targets are used, and points are given for fire discipline, and yesterday Captain Wallingford bestowed much nraise on the Karori represents tives for their conduct on the field, Opaki Rifle Club A team won the Field, firing Match, with a score of 27. This is a competition for testing marksmen’s knowledge of tactics in the field.
Satisfactory progress was made with the other matches, the scores of which are included in the list.
A couple of “Extra” matches were put on yesterday, and as many as were not shooting in the Service matches enjoyed themselves on the beloved bull’s-eyes at the long ranges. The Service matches will conclude to-day, and the Belt series will be entered upon on Monday.
