OBITUARY

SIR WILLIAM HENRY WHITE. LONDON, February 27. The death is announced of Sir William Henry White. Sir William Henry White. K.C.8., was born at Devonport in 1845. He was educated at the iioyal School of Naval Architecture, and held the Diploma of Fellow. (first-class). Prom 1867-83 he was in the Constructive Department of the Admiralty, rising to the rank of Chief Constructor. Ho was Professor of Naval Architecture at the Royal School of Naval Architecture and the Royal Naval College, 1870-81. He organised and directed the warship building department of Armstrong and Co., Newcastle, Director of Naval Construction and Assistant Controller of the Royal Navy from October, 1885. to February, 1902. During that Eeriod ho was responsible designer of all is Majesty’s ships. In consequence of ill-health he resigned his office and was awarded a special grant of money by vote of Parliament on recognition of exceptional services to tho Navy. Ho was consulting naval architect -for the Cunard liner Mauretania (1904-7); was a Past President of the Institution of Civil Engineers and many other public bodies. He was tho author of "A Manual of Naval Architecture," a treatise on shipbuilding, and of numerous professional papers published in the Transactions of tho Institutions of Naval Architects, Civil Engineers. Mechanical Engineers, and Iron and Steel Institute. He was twi'e mo'-T-ied, and loaves tLieo sons and one daughter.
