SHUT IN WRECKED CAB WIT 3 DEAD DRIVER BENEATH.
. LONDON, January 19. The midnight adventure of a nurs« in a Kent lane, who was imprisoned in an overturned cab, while the driver lay dead beneath it, was described at an inquest at St. Alary Cray on Itobert Langridge, aged fifty-seven, a Beckenham cab driver. The nurse, Mms Marcaret Thompson, stated that she engaged Langridge at Orpington-railway station to drive her to tfamborongh (Kent). It was a dark, wild night, and the rain was pouring in torrent*. After they had passed the last lamp in Tubbenden lane, Orpington,' the cab seemed to rise on its right side, then there was a sudden jar, and the vohiclo crashed over to its left side, throwing her amongst broken glass. She pulled herself up, and, knocking at the side of the cab, called out, “Driver, what has happened f” There was no reply, and she called out, “Driver, please help me out.” Still there was silence. Then she managed to pull open the window of the door, which was then above her, she added, and, first throwing her bag out, she attempted to climb out. She got up with one leg out of the window, but the other caught in the door, and she was unable to move. She remained in that position for over a quarter of an hour. It was pitch dark, raining heavily, the two lamps of the cab had gone out, the horse was still, and there was no sign of the driver. Presently she heard footsteps, and shouted out, “ Man, come and help me.” A man then came and released her, and they lit one of the lamps and searched for the driver, whom thev eventually found dead under the cab. The lane war described as dark and dangerous, and the jury, in passing a verdict of “accidental death',” added a rider asking the local parish councils to soft to the lighting and widening of the lane.
