Evidence of interest as showing the increased cost of living was tendered before the Leather Trades Group No. 7 (Coachmakers’) Wages Board at the Central Police Court, Sydney. Edward Bennetts, manager of the clothing department of W. Lowe and Co., Ltd., said there had been a considerable increase in the cost of clothing during the past three years. Suits which cost 22s 6d were now sold at 2os 6d. Generally speaking, goods which three years ago were sold at 30s wore now being sold at 355. Ihe increased selling price was due to the extra cost of manufacture. His firm sold about 4000 ready-to-wear suits annually, and about 14,000 tailor-made suits.' The firm had had to pay more than the mini mum rate to secure hands. The increased cost of labour accounted for about 75 per cent, .ot the enhanced price for clothing.
