ADJOURNED MEETING VARIOUS COMMITTEE REPORTS ADOPTED. Tho adjourned fortnightly meeting of tho Wellington City Council was held yesterday afternoon. Present: The Mayor (Mr D. McLaren), Councillors J. Smith, F. Cohen, G. Frost, J. Trevor, A. R. Atkinson, J. Godber, 6. Shirtcliife, E. I'regear, J. Fuller, and R. Fletcher, BATHS AND RESERVES. The following report of the baths and reserves committee was adopted: That the request of the Wellington Grocers’ Industrial Union of Workers for permission to use Newtown Park on Wednesday afternoon, April 9th, for a sports meeting be granted on the usual conditions. That the work of forming a track from Sugar Loaf road to Mitchell street be put in hand. The estimated cost of the work is £6. That Mr Treadgold be granted a lease of a piece of town belt at the top of Constable street (near section 8, town belt) for one year, on the following conditions: Rental to be paid, £3; a bond to be entered into to the effect that the section be cleared of gorse and kept in good condition and that any fencing required be erected and maintained in good order. That as recommended by the city engineer the question of provision of increased accommodation for bathers at Lyall Bay bo held over until next year. That as recommended by the custodian of Thomdon Baths, Wednesday and Saturday afternoons be the days for mixed bathing at such baths. That a person reported for misbehaviour be excluded from the' public baths for tho remainder of the season. The committee reported: That the city engineer reports' that soundings have been taken at the Te Aro Baths at 10 feet intervals, and that no indication of any great irregularities have been discovered. , That they have considered reports from the city engineer and superintendent of reserves in connection with'’the proposed improvements at Island Bay, asked for by the Island Bay Electors’ Association. Tho city engineer estimates the cost of construction of an esplanade with concrete sea wall and necessary filling required to_ be about £2300. The cost of planting Reef street with suitable shrubs is estim ated at £ls. The committee recommend that this matter be allowed to stand over until the completion of the Oriental Bay esplanade, when the matter will bo then considered. _ As regards the planting of the zig-zag at Clyde street, asked for by the association, the committee recommend that the request be acceded to. The estimated cost of the work is £7. That they have received an offer of £2O per annum for the lease of section of town belt, Grant road, containing abont sixty acres. The city valuer fixes the upset rental at £6O; tho committee recommend that the offer be .declined, and that the city” engineer be instructed to*bring down a scheme for the snb-division of the block into smaller sections, and also to submit an estimate of the cost of fencing. BY-LAWS, ETC. The by-laws, fire brigade, and street lighting committee recommended: That a lamp be erected at Charlotte avenue, Brooklyn, as recommended by the electrical engineer, at an estimated cost of £6 10s. ' That the application for the erection of a lamp at Drainage Reserve, Central terrace, stand over for the present. That in future any person depositing explosives in rubbish receptacles be prosecuted. % That, as recommended by the city engineer, permission be granted for the erection of a smoko house in Cuba street, provided a suitable iron flue is carried up well above the parapet of the adjacent buildings. That idle quotation of .the Vacuum Oil Company for the supply,of petrol for a period of twelve months, for a quantity up to 600 cases during the year, be accepted under seal. That the custodian of the Lyall Bay beach be empowered to remove from off the beach any person who is behaving in an objectionable manner. Tho committee reported: That they have instructed the superintendent of tho fire brigade to report as to the advisability of the erection of a fire brigade station at tho top of Constable street Hill to serve Newtown, Kilbirnie, and Island Bay districts, and also to bring down an approximate cost of tho scheme to the next meeting of the committee. Tho report was adopted.
