SLUR ON ROTORUA
MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS. Press Association. ROTORUA, February 27. A meeting of householders was held to-night to consider the report of the School Committee regarding the position of the movement for the establishment of a district high school here. The committee reported that in August last Mr Garland, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, had given a .verbal promise that when twenty pupils were obtained the establishment of a school would bo recommended to the Minister, and ho personally saw no reason why a school should not be started in % February. Last month Mr Garland visited Rotorua and stated that the board was opposed to a district bigh school, one reason advanced being that qualified teachers could not bo secured at the salaries the board was able to offer. Ho personally stated that Rotorua_ was not a desirable place, as a tourist resort, for a district high school, and said if he had ono hundred children he would not send on© of them hero. Speakers took exception to this slur on Rotorua, and the meeting passed a resolution that the Minister be approached directly on the subject*
