THE SHOOTING

SERVICE MATCHES STARTED. Riflemen do not love Service Matches, but yesterday three events of this type' were fired —the Loop-hole Cover Match, the Rapid Shooting Match, and tho Snapshooting. Generally speaking tho shooting was good, but marksmen say that they will be glad when the Belt Matches aro commenced on Monday. Considerable delay occurred in commencing firing in the morning on tho Collins range. This was due to a quantity of “spotters” being missing. On Wednesday night these requisites wero stored in a shed for noo in the morning, but when tho markers looked for them the major portion had disappeared. The delay caused a deal of annoyance, but matters went along smoothly after fresh “spotters ' had been procured. During one of the Service events two competitors wero disqualified for firing in tho Candian style, their forearms resting on the ground. This form of shooting is strictly forbidden, even at Bisley, and competitors mast hold tho rifle up in the usual military fashion when firing. 1 A slight misunderstanding occurred before shooting started in the morning on tho Sommerville range. The idea seemed to bo that the results of shots in the Loop-hole Cover Match would not be signalled back to the mounds by means of tho disc, but would be delivered by telephone. The telephone, however, is not fully to bo relied oh for such work; hoaco tho difficulty which arose. Subsequently intimation was given that the results would bo disced and everybody was satisfied. The programme provided that the shots must _be signalled at the eon elusion, of the firing.
