SWIMMING

WELLINGTON CLUB CARNIVAL. A DULL AFTERNOON. The carnival of the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club held at I© Aro baths on Saturday afternoon was not the pronounced success that members had had such good reason to anticipate. The weather, cloudy and threatening in the forenoon, improved as the afternoon advanced, and welcome sunshine tempered tlie chill of the southerly breeze towards the end of the meeting. The management, concerning which all sorts of good reforms had . been promised, was markedly inefficient. IB® few officials who did appear to fulfil their allotted tasks worked well, but there were defaulters in officialdom and the consequences disastrous to the success of the carnival. Competitors were few and the scratomngs many, a circumstance contributed to in small part by the weather and in a greater degree by the fact that many of those who had signified their intention of starting had not, at the time, returned from the territorial ca.mp, and so the carnival of the dullness of the weather, and it was only the good swimming of those who did start that kept absolute gloom at a comfortable distance.
