THE CZAR’S COOK
The "Neues Wiener Journal” gives the salary of the Bussian Emperor’s chief cook as JStiOO. His responsibilities are not restricted to the table of the Imperial family only, for it is his duty to provide for the thiee hundred inmates of the Palace as well. The food has to be scrupulously preps red/ and many of the kitchen hands are members of the secret police. The Ozar is no epicure, and his predilection is for plain dishes. He differs notably in this from most of his fellow sovereigns, such as Queen Wilhelmina of Holland, whose favourits dish is chocolate cream, or King Alfonso of Spain, who it is well known takes a personal interest in tho rivalry of Prench and Spanish cooking which goes on in the iloyal kitchen. By way of proving himself an expert in these things ho likes to tell how in July, 190$. with two cooks he devised in a rural inn the most delicious meal he had ever had.
