ONSLOW BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Onslow Borough Council met last evening, when there were present—The Mayor (ID- F. Holdsworth), Councillors G. It. Darvall, C. Aplin, jnr., It. W. Dingwall, C. McArthur, E. S. Stafford, B. Linnoberg, J. C. Gardner. Hi strict fund accounts amounting to d!275 4s 2d wore passed for payment. Oh the motion of the Mayor it was do--oided to bond a letter to Mr Living regarding his lighting of a dangerons fire in the Khandullah Domain and requesting greater care in. future. It was agreed that Mr Mostayor’e report on the water supply scheme be referred to a special committee, aud copies of the report sent put to members. A resolution wag carried imposing a 10 per cent, penalty on all rates and the -Kaiw-aiTa instalments unpaid sis months and fourteen days after tho data of demand (August 2nd, 16121. The engineer reported re the suggested new track from Hutt road to Victoria read that he had again been over tho ground, and after careful obeei-vation could not see that such a track would bo any improvement upon the present steep" grade in Winchester street. A fairly good grade oould be obtained at the particular part by doubling back on the public road and down to the three chain limit. From thin point to tho Hutt read tho grade would be as bad as that complained of unless the footway-were to have a lengthened and most circuitous course, and one that would occupy eo much of the land in question that it seamed certain the Government would never consent to such a proposal. In addition it would be necessary at the bottom to have several flights of stairs with a large number of steps, and this he thought would be more w-earieome to negotiate than the steep grade In Winchester street. Besides it would lie absolutely necessary that any such steep should be'well lighted, and, for this nurpose two lamps at least would certainly be required. Having regard to the traffic and all the circumstances of the ease he did not think the council would bo justified in going to the expense of having detailed survey plans, sections, and estimates made. The report was adopted.
