CITY DISFRANCHISEMENT
ACTIVE AGITATION IN THE PROVINCES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received January 15, 9.50 p.m.). LONDON, January 15. The large provincial centres are actively joining London’s agitation against city disenfranchisement. Almost all tho members of the city corporations will be ineligible if the amendment is adopted, as, under the 1849 Act common council candidates are hound to appear the Parliamentary register.
The London. "Daily Telegraph stated that the Government proposed to delete from the Franchise Bill ■ the occupation qualification in respect of land and premises, leaving the qualification residential. This will revolutionise the City of London's 6tatus, reducing the electors from 31,000 to 3000, ignoring financial and commercial interests. Other large centres will be similarly affected.
