SILVER PURCHASES
SIR STUART SAMUEL’S POSITION. LONDON, January 14. Sir John Simon, Solicitor-General, has given notice in the House of Commons to refer the question of Sir Stuart Samuel’s retention of his seat to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. A Parliamentary Committee was recently set up to report on the case of Sir Stuart Samuel, Liberal H.P. for Whitechapel, whose position as a member of the banking firm of Samuel, Montagu and Co., through which Indian Government purchases of silver were made, has been held in some quarters to place the member in an undesirable situation.
