OUT IN THE STREAM
VESSELS LAID UP. EFFECTS OF THE FIREMEN’S HOLIDAY. Practically nothing happened yesterday to change the position which has arisen in connection with the Union Company’s Mapourika and the Westport Coal Company’s Regains. Crews cannot be obtained to man the stokeholds until the union’s demands are acceded to, and so the vessels both remain in the harbour idle. The Mapourika was moved yesterday from her berth at Jervois quay out into the stream, where she is likely to remain for some time. The Regains has also gone into the stream for a holiday. In the meantime, the Union Company's West Coast service will be maintained by the Arabura, with the help of such other vessels as may be going that way. Last night, for instance, the Koonya left for Greymouth with whatever cargo was offering for that port, and to-night the Navua, which is going to Westport for coal, will take passengers who do not wish to wait for the Arabura. “These men are fools,” said a prominent trades unionist to a “New Zealand Times” reporter yesterday. “They have got the best seamen’s agreement there is anywhere, and here they are doing all they can to burst it up.”
