VICTORIA COLLEGE

BUSINESS AT COUNCIL MEETING. Victoria College Council held its monthly meeting last night. The members present were: Messrs C. Wilson (chairman), T. Fleming, W. Ferguson, A. R. Atkinson, R. McCallum, M.P., A. It. Meek, H. H. Ostler, and R. McNab. In the statement of finances it was shown that after meeting the monthly accounts, which totalled £799 18s Id, there would be a credit balance of £l6lß 2s lOd. Of the payments required, £759 13s 6d was for salaries. There was on deposit a sum of £IO2O. A request from the Kelburne scoutmaster for permission to occupy a small piece of the college reserve for the purposes of a clubroom was declined, on the ground that the council had no power to allow its land to be used for any other than college purposes. On the recommendation of the finance committee it was decided to appoint a demonstrator in physics at a salary of £l5O for the first year. It was stated that this year from 150 to 200 students could be expected. The chairman reported that good progress was being made with the alterations on the top floor. The large room at the south end, previously used for examinations and for senate meetings, was being fitted up as a lectureroom. The unoccupied room at the north end was being cut up into mental science classrooms, and would be so arranged that all Professor Hunter’s psychology work would come close together. The room in the centre and immediately over the library was to be fitted up as a class-room and also provided with shelving to relieve the pressure on the library accommodation. Improvements were to bo made in the seating in the library. The arrangements made by the subcommittee having the work in hand were approved by the council.
