MASTERTON NEWS
(From Our Own Correspondent.) January 14. Many retail shopkeepers are in- favour of changing the half-holiday from Thursday to Saturday. The employees certainly prefer Saturday, and it is almost certain that a poll on the question will be taken at the municipal elections in April next. Several wholesale firms now observe Saturday os the half-holiday. The statement that farmers’ sons will do the killing at freezing works should the slaughtermen strike is not seriously entertained by the bulk of the farming community. In fact the suggestion is generally ridiculed. The local company will probably accede to the men's terms as regards increased wages. The Masterton fire brigade will be represented at the Wanganui demonstration by Superintendent Jenkins, Foremen Braggms and Moore, Branchmen Dixon and H. Braggins. There are at present nineteen patients in the Masterton hospital, including one case of fever. The output of the Kahumingi station, which “cut out” on Saturday, was 47 bales of wool more than last season from practically the same number of sheep. A fire occurred at the residence of Mrs S. Check in Church street on Sunday night through a candle setting light to some curtains. The outbreak was got under before much damage was done. Mr and Mrs E. Steadman, of Melbourne ,aro on a visit to Masterton, and are staying with Mrs Donald Donald, who is a sister of Mrs Steadman. Mrs Gower and Miss Ruby Gower arrived back in Masterton yesterday after, a prolonged visit to Perth.
