UTILISING WASTE SPACES

One way in which otherwise waste corners of farm homesteads may he profitably utilised is well illustrated on the State farm at ■ Moumahaki. Wherever it has been found awkward or otherwise inadvisable : to work- the plough in portions of fields that have been put under crop the land that would in the ordinary way be allowed to remain idle has been planted with pumpkins. No very great amount of labor has been expended, as only the patches where the pumpkin seed has been planted has been prepared. It is now becoming more widely recognised that pumpkins are a very valuable food for all classes of stock; and the possession of a few tons of this fodder would be found useful on most farms; if not, there is always a profitable market where they can be turned into cash.
