Twenty-three petitions have been presented against the Government's action in connection with Government House. In reply to questions the Premier (Mr McGowen) declined to accept a challenge, to produce the letters he stated he had received endorsing' the Government’s action. Regarding the legal opinion obtained, Mr McGowen said: "If an injunction to restrain the Government can be obtained, let it be." MOUNT MORGAN MINE. BRISBANE, December 5. Daring November the- Mount Morgan copper reduction works treated 25,7X9 tons of ore, which yielded 864 tons of blister copper, containing 855 tone of copper and 13,0790 z of gold, the total value being .£106,216. The Attorney-General (Mr Holman), in. a speech at Wellington defending the Government, said that before it left office over three million acres would be opened for settlement. It was the first Government not to make the interests of a single city dominate those of the State. . CABLE RATES. LONDON. December 4. Mr- Herbert Samuel, Postmaster-Gen-’ eral, in reply to Mr Harry Lawson in the House of Commons, stated that the terminal charges in Australia prevented a larger reduction in cable rates at present. The charges were under consideration. SYDNEY GAS BILL. SYDNEY, December S. The Parliamentary compromise over the Gas Bill will probably end the dispute between the company and its employees. A deputation from the Criminological Society asked Mr Murray to ‘ cancel floggings of Moore and McDonald, two '‘lifers." Mr Murray was decidedly unsympathetic, and said the only way to reach such men was through their skins. Cabinet decided that one flogging, at least, should be administered, and there was no reason to reopen the matter, matter. STRIKERS AND STRIKE-BREAKERS.
