FEDERAL COUNCIL'S DECISION PROTESTANTS AND THE JESUITS. By Telegraph—Preu Association —Copyright (Received December 6, 11-30 p.m.) BERLIN, December 5. The Imperial Chancellor, Herr von Bothmann-ilollweg, stated in the Reichstag that the decision of the Federal Council merely' involved tne codification of a long-prevailing practice as regards the Jesuits. If the Centro withdraw their confidence they will simply make the anti-Jesuit laws the keystone of their_ political programme. Antipathy oT Protestants towards the Jesuit order was justified by the latter’s past history.
On December 2nd it waj reported that the newspaper “Frankfurter Zeitung" stated that the Chancellor, Herr von Bethmann Hollwcg, had informed a leading member of the Catholic Centre that the recent Papal Encyclical, enjoining German Catholic artisans to belong to purely Catholic trade unions, represented the limit of interference from the Vatican which could be permitted. A recurrence would cause the withdrawal of the Minister at the Vatican. Interest arises in the issue as Herr Von Hollweg is dependent on tho Catholic rote to combat the Socialists. Friction is increased by the Federal Council’s rejection of Bavaria's claim for a more liberal interpretation of tho anti-Jesuit law. The “Volks Zeitung" and ''Germania" declared that Catholics will never tolerate the police regime which a Prussianised Germany seeks to impose on Jesuit propaganda-
