FAMINE IN HIDES

Inquiries locally reveal a serious hide famine due to operations by American and Canadian buyers, who have tapped the world’s markets, practically draining Australia and New Zealand. The Dominion cannot materially increase her output, largely on account of tho breaking up of the big estates. AUCKLAND, December 5. Owing to the still-increasing cost of hides, which are now stated to be selling at phenomenal prices, the New Zealand Tanners’ Association resolved to-day to again advance the price of. leather by Id per lb, aild Is 6d per* side, and id per foot for chromes.
