ENGLISH
>■ To tho Editor “N.Z. Times.” Sir, —X want to ask Mr Baeyertz a question. How does he pronounce • figure"? I say it “figger," to rhyme with "nigger." Chambers's dictionary mako it "fig-yaw." Surely this simple question is not “veiled abuse"; nor does ic stamp me as “a meddler and a crank." My contention is that bcth Mr Morton and ,Mr Baeyertz speak old-fashioned pedantic English; some of it good once, but not good now; provincial English, not English of the centre. Is this abuse? Mv own English leaves much to be desired. I am always glad to lc*m, and believe I improve every day. It is this humble spirit I recommend to Bulls of Bashau generally, and especially to anyone with “cows" on tho brain.—l am, ?t °" W A TTt.TM A. . Tane, December Brd.
