TECHNICAL SCHOOL

DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES. AWARDS AND CERTIFICATES FOR THE YEAR. The concert chamber of the Town. Hall was crowded last evening, on the occasion of the annual distribution of prizes- to scholars of the Wellington Day Technical School. Mr D. Robertson, chairman of the Technical School Board, presided, and the Mayor (Mr D. McLaren) distributed the prizes and certificates. The Mayor said that the size of the gathering indicated the importance of technical education, which was touching the whole life of the people on all sides. It was necessary that technical education should be developed, in the interests of our industries. There was urgent need for a proper technical college in Wellington, with sufficient playing grounds. The board hoped in the future to provide for physical training as well as technical and intellectual. He congratulated the students on the excellent work of the year, and said that, in view of the difficulties under which the work was carried on, the results were wonderful, reflecting great credit on the director, Mr La Trobe. He urged on the students that the finest prize was that of a good life. (Applause.) STEADY PROGRESS. The director read apologies for absence from the Minister of Education, the Postmaster-General, and others. The Wellington City Council took a great interest in technical education. The past year had been one of steady progress, and the number of students was 1650. Classes were held in five different buildings, and one-third the accommodation was temporary. It was hoped that provision would be made in the new site for playing grounds. Satisfactory progress was being made in the engineering classes, and domestic economy classes had been well attended. Examination work had been as successful as usual. About 850 passes would be recorded in the books tii is year. In regard to attendance, the year had been satisfactory. The school cadet corps had made steady progress. GREAT VITALITY. - Mr R. Leo (chairman of the tion Board) said he saw signs of great vitality among the students, and it was positively amazing tliat they- liad. no less than 1600 technical students in Wellington. They were, however, almost homeless, and did not have elbowroom for their work. Ho was voicing the unanimous opinion of the Education Board in saying it would give every assistance to technical education —(applause)—and the board was in close sympathy with the Technical Board in trying to fin'd the necessary accommodation. Industries had greatly advanced, and required greater study and training. Mr J. P., Luke paid a tribute to the director and staff of the school, who were seized of the responsibilities of their office. He hoped tho school would continue to prosper. (Applause.)
